How to Set Up Light for Product Photography

Light reveals material and form

In product photography, lighting is responsible for more than brightness. It shows texture, shape, colour and finish. Before adding lights, decide which qualities of the object should be most visible.

Start with one large soft source

A large softbox or diffused window placed to one side is a dependable starting point. It creates smooth transitions and controlled reflections, especially on glossy products. Move the light closer for softer reflections and farther away for more contrast.

Use fill and flags

White foam board can lift shadows without adding another light. Black cards do the opposite: they create darker reflections and help define the edges of shiny objects. Small adjustments often have a bigger effect than raising light power.

Control reflections

Photographing glass, metal and polished surfaces is really about photographing what they reflect. Work with large diffusion panels, clean the product carefully and change the camera position before trying to repair a reflection in post-production.

Simple workflow

  1. Place the product and build the composition.
  2. Set one key light and evaluate the reflections.
  3. Add fill or negative fill only where needed.
  4. Check colour, edge detail and shadow density at full resolution.
