Portrait Photography Settings

Goal: a polished portrait

Portrait photography requires reliable eye tracking, natural rendering of the model’s movement and control of depth of field. The RF 85mm f/1.4 VCM delivers clinical sharpness and soft bokeh — provided autofocus and stabilisation are configured correctly.

AF settings (Canon R6 / R6 II)

AF mode

Servo AF

The VCM motor in the RF 85mm f/1.4 is extremely fast. Servo works perfectly even with small movements from the model and provides reliable eye focus for studio and outdoor portraits.

Subject detection

  • Eye AF: ON
  • Priority: human eye
  • Detection: people
  • Detection sensitivity: Standard

This combination gives the most reliable eye focus, even with slight head movement, turning or tilting.

Tracking parameters

  • Tracking Sensitivity: –1 — the camera stays with the face instead of jumping to the background.
  • Accel/Decel Tracking: +1 — useful for small movements by the model.
  • AF Point Switching: 0 — neutral, without aggressive point changes.

AF area

  • Flexible Zone AF 1 (small) — the most controllable choice for portraits.
  • Flexible Zone AF 2 (medium) — an alternative for reportage.

Shutter / focus priority

Servo AF: Focus priority

The RF 85mm f/1.4 focuses reliably even with movement, so there is no need to trade sharpness for speed.

Stabilisation settings (IBIS + IS) for 85 mm

IS Mode

IS Mode: ON
IS Mode 1 — the most natural stabilisation, without a “floating” effect.

Minimum shutter speed (Auto Min. Shutter)

1/160 s — an ideal balance for 85 mm: sharp images without micro-shake.

Alternatives:

  • 1/200 s — for more dynamic shots and movement.
  • 1/125 s — for static portraits.

Shutter mode

Electronic First Curtain (EFCS)
The best sharpness and no rolling-shutter artefacts.

Avoid: a fully electronic shutter at 85 mm, as it can cause slight distortion when the subject moves.

Video stabilisation

  • IBIS: ON
  • IS Mode: Standard
  • Digital IS: OFF (unless you are shooting run-and-gun)

The RF 85mm f/1.4 has very little focus breathing, so IBIS produces a very natural image.

Practical tips for the RF 85mm f/1.4

  • A distance of 1.2–2.5 m gives the most attractive bokeh and background separation.
  • f/1.4–1.8 is the sweet spot: clinical sharpness and a soft, creamy background.
  • A little movement from the model? Servo + Eye AF + Tracking –1 works perfectly.
  • LED light / Godox V100C: use 1/200 s to freeze small movements.
  • Backlight: AF works very well and does not lose the subject as easily as some f/1.2 lenses.
