Colour in Photography

Colour directs attention

Colour is one of the fastest ways to influence the mood and hierarchy of an image. Warm and cool tones, contrast and saturation can guide the viewer before they have time to study the subject.

Colour relationships

Complementary colours, such as blue and orange, create energy and separation. Related colours create a calmer, more cohesive image. Neither approach is automatically better; the relationship should suit the subject and the intended atmosphere.

Keep saturation under control

Strong colour can be attractive, but too much saturation quickly overwhelms texture and detail. It is often more effective to let one key colour stay vivid while keeping the rest of the frame restrained.

Consistent colour

Pay attention to white balance, mixed light sources and the colour of the background. A consistent colour treatment across a series makes the work feel considered and helps the viewer concentrate on the story rather than technical distractions.
