A good product-photography background should strengthen the visual message without competing with the object. Its colour, texture and brightness should be chosen for the product, not only for the set.
Neutral backgrounds are reliable for catalogues and online shops because they keep attention on the item. A coloured background can make an image more expressive, but it should work with the product’s material and brand palette.
Texture adds character, especially for lifestyle images, but it must remain secondary. Wood, paper, fabric or stone can be effective when their scale does not distract from smaller details of the product.
Make sure the product does not disappear into a background of a similar tone. A change in light direction, a rim light, or a small tonal difference can create clean separation without resorting to heavy editing.
The strongest background is often the one viewers barely notice because it makes the product look its best.
