Framing and Composition in Photography

Composition gives the image direction

Composition is the way elements are arranged inside the frame. It decides what the viewer notices first, how the eye travels through the image and whether the photograph feels calm, dynamic or tense.

Keep the subject clear

Start by identifying the most important element and giving it enough visual space. Change your position, simplify the background and watch the edges of the frame. Cropping is useful, but the strongest composition is usually made before the shutter is pressed.

Useful tools, not rigid rules

  • Use lines to lead the eye toward the subject.
  • Balance large and small shapes across the frame.
  • Use negative space when you want a quieter image.
  • Try different heights and distances before choosing a focal length.

Rules such as the rule of thirds are a good starting point, not a destination. The important question is always whether the arrangement supports the subject and the feeling of the photograph.
