Venice – photographs of canals, bridges and historic architecture
In this album I show Venice on a cloudy day, from the broad Grand Canal to narrow canals and streets between buildings. The gallery includes the Rialto Bridge, the Bridge of Sighs, St Mark’s Square and Basilica, and the Doge’s Palace. Alongside recognisable monuments, I photographed less grand fragments of the city: peeling plaster, green shutters, moored boats and façades reflected in the water.
I was interested in how architecture connects here with movement on the canals. Gondolas, motorboats and water buses bring life between the motionless walls of palaces. The soft light beneath the clouds allowed me to study the colours and details of the buildings without basing the entire composition on harsh shadows.
I took the photographs with a Canon EOS R6 Mark II, adapting the framing to the confined space of narrow streets or the breadth of the view over the water. The shot settings are available in the EXIF data alongside the photographs. This is my record of a walk through Venice, covering both its famous places and quieter corners noticed along the way.
