Locomotives with faces – photographs in the world of Thomas and Friends
In this gallery, I show locomotives with faces among tracks, carriages and railway platforms. A blue engine styled as Thomas, a green locomotive numbered six and dark steam engines with smiling faces evoke the world of “Thomas and Friends”. These photographs combine a storybook theme with details of real railways: wheels, chimneys and rising steam.
In closer frames, the faces and contrasting colours of the locomotives draw the most attention. Wider views show their surroundings and differences in size between vehicles. In one photograph, a face emerges from a thick cloud of steam; in another, a view from above reveals the arrangement of the engine and carriages beside the platform. People and station features give these scenes scale and the character of photographic souvenirs.
The album also includes a close-up of a metal wheel and the black-and-red body of a steam engine, as well as a vintage red double-decker bus. These images broaden the railway theme to include other aspects of historic transport. I took the photographs with a DMC-FX10 at ISO 100. In this series, what matters most to me is the captured situations, colour and small details that create the cheerful atmosphere of an encounter with locomotives.
