Worth Knowing: The Fundamentals of Better Photographs

Technique serves intention

Camera settings are important, but they become useful only when they support the image you want to make. A clear subject, considered light and a deliberate frame are the foundations of photographs that remain convincing over time.

Three questions before pressing the shutter

  • What is the main subject? Remove or simplify anything that competes with it.
  • Where is the best light? Watch its direction, contrast and colour before moving the camera.
  • What should the viewer feel? Let distance, focal length and moment support that answer.

Work slowly when you can

Look around the edges of the frame, check the background and take one extra moment to refine the composition. Small changes in position often improve an image more than changing equipment.

Review with purpose

After a session, do not look only for technical mistakes. Notice which frames have the strongest message and why. That habit makes your next decisions more confident and more personal.
